Dear studio friends, Here we are, having weathered February. Well done, however you managed it. For me, even small efforts to be creative helped offset the dark, the cold, the ice, and the alarming geo-political situation. The theme of February's Broken Box assignment turned out to be “Editing.” Over and over, I was reminded that my plans needed cutting. The more I could let go—get rid of large portions, allow the initial concept to break and become less than I'd planned—the stronger the box became. Below are a few of February’s Broken Boxes. The larger collection is here if you’d like to see more. Another project that has been taking shape is a weekly photographic documentation of my town's Salt Shed, located at the Department of Public Works highway garage, a few miles from my studio. Its massive interior space hosts an evolving landscape of road salt of various colors, towering piles that are used and replenished as needed. The salt's interaction with the wood structure creates an accumulation of colors and textures on the walls. Many thanks to Jaret, DPW Superintendent, for granting me access to the salt shed and showing me where the light switches are. 😊 This photo series isn’t on my website yet but below is a glimpse of what I've captured so far.
